How to Make Money On Instagram: 5 Easy Steps

There are many new ways to make money online, and they just keep getting more interesting and clever. However, there is this one social media tool that is rarely used for that purpose. Today, you will learn how to make money on Instagram.

According to the latest numbers, Instagram has more than 1000 million users. Not only that, they reported in September 2017 that they have 500 million daily users. You can imagine how valuable this traffic is.

However, making money from Instagram is not as easy as you may think. Monetizing this traffic is quite tricky.

1 – Have Something to Sell

To make money from Instagram, you need to have something to sell in the first place. You can’t just come into the platform and start earning.

Still, you can easily create something that is monetizable. Here I give you a few examples:

A.  Website with Adsense

You can create a site and apply for Google Adsense. You will be using Instagram as a way to promote your blog and earn money through the ad revenue that you receive from Google Adsense. It is a simple idea as driving that traffic to your website is relatively easy.

B.  E-commerce store

Not only you can have Adsense on your blog, but you can have an online store set up. Or, you can just redirect the traffic to your page on Shopify or Etsy. The point is that you have products that Instagram users can find when they click on your links. Your goal will be to maximize conversion rates for product sales.

C.  Landing page

You do not always need a product ready for sale to make money online. Instead, you can use Instagram as a way to promote your landing pages. When you grow your email list, you can then monetize it through affiliate marketing or promotions of different kinds. The sky is the limit when you have a large active email list.

D.  Shout-outs

Shout-outs are probably the most used way to make money on Instagram. This is exactly like a brand promotion or advertising on your blog, except that you will be doing it on your Instagram account. There are many smaller accounts, brands, and companies who will pay to promote their content. For this to be possible though, you will need a large following base that you can leverage.

E.  Buy and Sell

Another way to make money on Instagram is the reason why you feel like someone hacked your account and followed some new Instagram page. Many people buy big accounts and use them to make money using the four ways above. There are also those who create accounts and make them as big as they can and offer them for sale.

2 – Make an Instagram account

Of course, there is no making money with Instagram if you don’t have an account yet. You can easily do so as you can use your phone number, email, or Facebook account to create one in a couple of seconds.

However, creating the account is not the most challenging part. You need to set up your profile correctly so you can maximize what Instagram can do for you.

To optimize your profile on Instagram, you should:

  • Add a description
  • Add a link to your blog/e-com shop
  • Link it to social media
  • Add a few hashtags related to your niche.

These are seemingly simple steps, yet they can make the difference in how well your profile performs.

3 – Content With hashtags

Instagram is a visual content-based social media platform. This means that your best chance to make money on Instagram is by sharing attractive images and videos on your profile.

Instagram used to have a strict square image system, but now they allow many more formats both for video and images. Not only that, you can share multiple pictures or videos at once.

You can use the Instagram Stories feature to share content as well.

A.  Hashtags

But the most important thing is that you should always use hashtags to get maximum exposure. You should look for and create a list of 20-30 hashtags that are relevant to your niche and add about 5 to 10 of them with each of your posts. The more relevant, the better.

You should make your selection of hashtag both random and not random. By that I mean, don’t repeat the same list of hashtags within a week, and always keep the hashtags you use as relevant to your image as possible.

B.  Copyright-Free

As a rule of thumb, you should never use a picture on Instagram that is not yours, or you do not have the copyrights to. It is that simple (if you want to avoid future monetization problems).

There are two ways I highly recommend for creating engaging content for your Instagram account.

The first is using a phone app called InstaQuotes. This application allows you to create simple images with a copyright-free background image and your own quote. It is simple to use.

The second is using Pixabay (or another copyright-free image database) to select images and add text to them using basic Photoshop skills.

You can actually mix the two and use Pixabay App to find copyright-free images, download them to your phone, and use InstaQuotes to add your text on them.

C.  Original Content

If you are in a niche that allows you to use your own content, even better. Original Content will most of the time bring more ROI.

You can use your phone to take pictures or use some graphic designer to create original content for you. The important is to share engaging content and use hashtags to make it easily found on Instagram.

4 – Build Your Following

You can’t make money on Instagram unless you have a large following base. Many automated services will promise you a large following base. I don’t recommend them.

The best way is to do it manually and selectively. My best advice is to find a big influencer in your niche and follow those who are active on their comment section.

There are two reasons for this:

  • These people are active, real accounts on Instagram
  • They are willing to follow an Influencer if they have good enough content

These Instagram users are the ones you should be after. The more engaging, the better.

5 – Direct Your Following to Your Goal

The final step is adding a clear Call-to-Action for your Instagram content based on how you would like to make money.

Whenever you post something, have a link to the website you want them to visit, or simply ask them to check your profile bio and click on it.

When you have about 10,000 followers on your account, you can start using the “Swipe Up” feature on your Instagram Stories which redirects your followers to the link you shared with them.


With these steps, you can start making money on Instagram as soon as you have a good number of people following you. Of course, the bigger the number, the more money you can make.
