When you are trying to promote your content online, you are effectively engaging in content marketing. What you probably don’t know is that there is a possibility to make money with content marketing.
It is important to understand what “content marketing” is before we can talk about how to make money with it.
Here is a simple definition from Google:
[Content marketing is] a type of marketing that involves the creation and sharing of online material (such as videos, blogs, and social media posts) that does not explicitly promote a brand but is intended to stimulate interest in its products or services.
In other words, anything you can produce online and aim to share it on a mass scale is a form of content marketing. It can be articles and blog posts that you publish on your website and share with your email list, pictures and infographics, videos on YouTube, and even audio podcasts.

Making money with content marketing requires strategic planning and not just some randomness in content creation. In a nutshell, you need to:
- Decide what your goal is,
- Research content topics
- Produce content on those topics
- Add a call-to-action
- Promote the content you have created.
We will go through each of the steps below in a little bit more detail below. Please note that I will focus mostly on blog posts on this article. However, the same rules, more or less, apply to all content types.
1 – Decide What Your Content Marketing Goal Is
When you are doing content marketing, you should define what your end goal is. There are basically two type of goals:
Direct response goals
A Direct Response Goal is when your content marketing efforts are to sell a product you are writing about or trying to grow your email list. This goal is, as its name suggests, a way to directly earn from your content marketing efforts.
You can be either selling ads on your website (Adsense or sponsored posts) which means you make money when someone visits your blog and clicks on the ads or purchase a product you are promoting.

Most of your content marketing efforts are likely going to be a form of brand building. Therefore, you should write and promote the best content you have on your blog. The information you provide should be valuable, and if possible, new to the industry readers.
With this goal in mind, you aim to become an authority in your niche, and not just another blog among others. You want your audience to trust you a reference and a valid source of information when they are looking for answers to industry-related questions.
2 – Research content topics
Once you have decided on which goal you want to pursue, you should look for topics to write about.
Depending on what you need, you should create a list of topics to write about that. This should help you create a content calendar that will keep you busy for a while.
To find the best content in your niche, use a service such as BuzzSumo. It is a freemium tool that allows you to see which topics have a tendency of going viral.
3 – Produce content on those topics
Now that you have topics on your list, you should start writing the best content possible. It is understandable that writing may not be your cup of tea. The solution is pretty simple: outsourcing.

Whether you are planning to write your own content or hiring someone to do it for you, you should follow a consistent structure.
I recommend an outline similar to this:
- Introduction: introduce the topic and why it is relevant to your industry and to your reader specifically.
- Information: this is where you put the relevant information about the topic. You aim to make your reader an expert with as much or as little information as they need to know about the topic.
- Product: here is where you put the products or services you are promoting or trying to sell to your reader. (if you are using Adsense only, then this doesn’t really matter.)
- Conclusion: you summarize your content piece in as few words as possible. You remind the reader to take action depending on your goal. More on that below.

4 – Add a call-to-action
For you to make money with content marketing, your articles should include CTAs. These simple sentences tell the reader what action to take.
If you are simply using ads to make money, having a call-to-action is not a priority. You don’t need to include it.
But if you have other earning methods, you need to have a clear CTA in your article.
In case you have an article promoting an affiliate product, you can ask your reader to click on the buy button to learn more about the product and try it for free or for a small fee.
If you have a landing page, you should ask your reader to subscribe to your list for future updates.
These are a few examples of why having a CTA is important to your content marketing.
5 – Promote the content you have created.
The final step in content marketing is ‘marketing’. So far, all of this has been about the content, and now it is time to promote it.
Making money with content marketing requires driving a large amount of targeted traffic to your blog and make sure they have a high conversion rate.

It does not simply mean advertising, but it is a wholesome marketing strategy specifically designed so that you become the authority in your niche.
