“Getting a job is for losers,” Robert Kawasaki once said. I bet many people will disagree because we live in a society where a job is seen as the most important thing in the world. Without a vocation or a career, how are you going to make money to fulfill your needs and wants? How are you going to get the social status and self-respect you are currently getting now that you are working?

The Rich Dad, Poor Dad author explained the differences between creating a job and getting a job. Like the “poor dad,” we were all taught that we have to work hard as students and finish our degree so we can get our dream jobs. Yes, once you get a job, you’ll get a steady stream of income but your earnings are limited and it may not be the kind of life you were dreaming of. It can get pretty exciting during the first few years, but as time goes by, you will get tired of the home and work routine.

So why not just create a job, or shall I say, start a business? It comes with risks, but it also comes with more perks, like you get to rule your kingdom and your pay will depend on your hard work. The biggest advantage is you have the option to do what you truly love and just enjoy the process.

The good news is we live in a digital age when making money is possible without going to the office or just following orders from an employer. And you’re not going to be judged because many people do it! Here, I’ve compiled all the ways you can make ends meet, without a real job:

how to make money without a job in the wonderful age of the internet start a service

Start a service business

A service business provides professional support and intangible products. There are more than a hundred types of service businesses you can start today, but if you want to focus on services that you can do online or anywhere, here are my top suggestions:

CV/Resume Editing

Writing a resume is actually more difficult than what it looks like. You are selling yourself to convince a company that you are worth hiring but how are you going to do it on a piece of paper? As a resume editor, your clients trust you to create value to anyone who reads it. You need to be creative but you have to be careful not to overdo it, otherwise your client will appear unrealistic. The best skills to have as a CV or resume writer are advanced English level, attentiveness to details, and analytical thinking skills.

Mystery shopping

Want to earn money while doing something fun? Be a mystery shopper. Many companies are looking for people who can help them observe if their employers are actually complying to their company’s standards and practices. Obviously, you need to be very observant and have an eye for detail. It also helps if you have excellent grammar and good spelling for documentation purposes.

Majority of companies these days are hiring English online teachers. But if English is not your forte, you can teach other subjects like math and even the advanced ones like programming. You don’t have to worry about the worksheets or activities to do with your students because most of the time, these will already be provided once you passed the exam.

Financial Consulting

If you are holding a degree in finance or related courses, you can have a competitive edge and secure a job as a financial consultant online. What’s nice about living in this digital age is you are not just limited to giving advice face-to-face. You can do it through the phone, video chat, or conference. As a personal adviser, your job entails assessing your client’s personal situation prior to making recommendations.

Blog coaching

If you are not new to the blogosphere and want to share your experiences, you can start a business called blog coaching. Basically, you will be spending hours answering your client’s questions, tracking their progress, and staying focused. You will be working with newbies or those who have been blogging for a while but has not seen any good results. This means you may need to help your client plan out strategies so they can meet their goals.

Social media manager

You spend hours browsing on sites like Facebook and Instagram, don’t you? It’s time-consuming and you may not notice how many hours you have spent just scrolling on your newsfeed. If managing a social media page sounds easy to you, you can start a career as a social media VA or manager. Your job will involve not just monitoring pages for businesses but also helping them with their campaigns. In addition to writing good copies, you will also need some editing skills especially if you want to work for photo or video-heavy sites like Facebook and Instagram.

Start a gig on Fiverr.

Much like service businesses, you can start earning online without a real job by joining Fiverr. But what I like about this site is that you can offer services that are not as difficult as writing or creating graphics. Plus, you can start your gig even with no investment as long as you have the skills.

Some people earn a lot of money on Fiverr by doing funny things like “delivering your message as gay guy” or by “making happy smiling girls in bikinis hold your signage on beach.” See, it’s either you just have that sense of humor or some editing skills to begin with.

If you are into arts and crafts, you can sell your designs and earn a minimum of $5 for every work done. You can even charge more depending on the kind of work you do. For example, there are artists on Fiverr that charge around $15 for painting a portrait in watercolor style. They add $10-$20 for extras like adding a person on the portrait or if the client demands for a higher resolution size.

how to make money without a job in the wonderful age of the internet invest

Investing is no longer just a thing of the wealthy elite. Nowadays, you can start investing and make money work for you even with just $100 in your wallet. What’s even better is you can do it right in the comfort of your home.

In case you haven’t heard of them before, robo-advisors are automated investment platforms that let you invest on a budget, because you are not paying for an investment advisor in the first place. It will automatically manage your portfolio at a relatively lower fee so it also comes with smaller risks. They are ideal for people who are afraid to invest because of the big amount of money involved.

But what if you are thinking of investing in real estate? You will be glad to know that you don’t need to have hundreds of thousands of dollars to invest in real estate. You can pay an initial down payment or even make your monthly payments a bit higher instead of paying for a big deposit. Rent to own scheme make it possible to lease a property with the option of buying. In case you are wondering where to get your deposit money, you can start an online side hustle and start saving using the money you earn from it. If you cannot wait to start, you can borrow from family members, friends, or from private investors.

Erik Tozier, a programmer from Minnesota, earns six figures through house hacking and side hustling. House hacking refers to living on one of the units of your investment property and renting out the remaining units to others so they will be the ones paying your mortgage.

Like Erik, you can start house hacking with the property you already have. Some people start with just a little money they earned from savings. If you are interested in house hacking, you will need to save up for a duplex or a triplex that you are willing to share with others at a certain price.

List your space.

If you already have a property, but you don’t find “house hacking” the right business for you, you can do it in a more fashionable manner. Let’s say you have extra space at home. Instead of just letting it sit empty, you can rent it out or host it on sites like Airbnb,, and HomeAway.

It only takes a bit of work and creativity to give your old garage or extra room a hotel-like feel. Make the space comfortable for your guests by cleaning it thoroughly, removing your own stuff, and providing a good mattress. You will also make your guests happy by adding things your guests will need like extra blankets and pillows or maybe a toaster or a microwave.

Eben and Darcee Mond, a couple from Colorado, beautifully restored Victorian cottage located in the heart of the Rocky Mountain and rents it out for around $125 per night. Imagine how much this couple earns a month if they are fully booked!

Answer questions.

Taking polls and answering surveys are among the best side-hustles, but they will not pay you enough to cover your monthly expenses. If you want a more lucrative way to earn, but still revolves around answering questions, join sites that will pay you to answer professional questions. They require you to share more personal information but those are just for verification. Be careful, though, because not all of the sites you will stumble upon are legit websites. Do a quick search about that website first or read reviews about it before sharing your personal information.

JustAnswer, a question and answer website founded by Andy Kurtzig in 2003, is hands down the most popular of all. Many people turn to the website mostly for health and legal concerns, although it covers a wide range of categories. You can get paid once a visitor who posted a question accepted your answer. The pay rate varies but you can get as much as $5 per question successfully answered.

To prove that you are an expert in your field, you will need to provide documents like your CV, your previous employer’s name, copy of your professional license and your recent photo upon registering on the website. Here are some JustAnswer alternatives that also pay for every question you answer:

  •  AllExperts
  • The Answer Bank
  • Wise Geek
  • Askville by Amazon

Create an online course.

One of the proven ways to make money online is to make online courses. But at this time and age, do they still sell like hotcakes? Yes, you can still make big money with them as long as you have the right marketing skills and strategy!

To begin with, you have to come up with a topic you know by heart. Let’s say you are an expert when it comes to building simple interactive apps. You can share your knowledge through an online course to help others learn the basics of building apps. Rice University’s Coursera course, titled “An Introduction to Interactive Programming in Python,” is one of the most popular online free courses that has more than 40,000 students interested. In addition to Coursera, here are a few more platforms where you can create and earn from your courses:

  • Udemy
  • Kadenze
  • FutureLearn
  • Bloc
  • Skillshare
  • Khan Academy
  • Udacity
  • edX
  • Complexity Explorer

Be a YouTuber.

As per Business Insider, the highest-paid YouTube star of 2019 is Ryan, a 7-year-old toy reviewer with more than $22 million in earnings. His parents began recording his toy reviews around 2015 and in just three years time, Ryan already has more than 20 million subscribers.

From sharing their simple joys and adventures, Ryan and his parents are now working with Walmart for an exclusive partnership for a toy line.

You don’t need millions of subscribers to start making serious money on this platform. You can earn up to $1,000 if you have around a hundred videos getting 5,000 views each. Here are some tips to get more YouTube views and subscribers:

  • Come up with more videos. As you can see, quality is not everything on this platform. You will also need to put emphasis on the amount of videos you can produce per month. Besides, when you already have subscribers, they will constantly check if you have new videos on your channel. You definitely don’t want to keep them waiting too long.
  • Make your titles catchy. Will people actually click your video upon seeing your title? Or will they ignore because it already looks boring? As of now, there are already more than 50 million creators on YouTube and you’ve got to be creative and hardworking to get to the superstar level. From an SEO standpoint, it is important to use the right set of words. You will also need to be descriptive to attract more viewers.
  • Add captions. Accessibility is the number one reason why creators need to add captions in their videos. Did you know that around 70% of people with disabilities abandon a page if it is not accessible enough? More than that, it is also worth considering that not all your viewers use English as their first language. And let’s also admit that many videos don’t have a good audio quality. By adding a caption, you can create a better engagement.

The last but not the least is blogging. Even years from now, blogging will still be a lucrative source of income. With so many blogs being published in a day, it can be challenging to get ahead of the competition or rank on search engines. But you can generate views through internet marketing and of course, by creating compelling content.

One of the things to work on, if you want to get ahead of the competition, is to keep your posts longer and as in-depth as possible. According to Curata, longer blog posts get as much as nine times more leads compared to the shorter ones. The popular types of articles include news, lists and how-tos, which is evident in the top-paying blogs like Huffington Post, Engadget, and CopyBlogger.

The best part about blogging is that you can do it anytime and anywhere and you can even sell it in the future just like what Pete Cashmore did with Mashable. He put up the website back in 2005 while working from home in Scotland. He was able to sell his blog for more than $50 million in December 2017.

Making money without a job at this day and age can be a reality. But this will still entail a bit of creativity, hard work, and patience. The best part about making money online is you get to pursue the things you love while enjoying the perks. You have more time for you and for your family and you are your own boss. More than that, there is no limit to how much you can make a month.
